Having coffee with a sponsor is a recovery tradition older than the 12-Steps! There are probably many reasons for this that we haven't even thought about, but here are a few:
For so many of us, getting sober only intensified our social anxiety. It's part of why we did what we did in the first place -- "It did let us act extemporaneously." Meeting in a public place with our sponsor can help us learn to have real-life conversation.
Informal settings like a coffee shop create a relaxed atmosphere, making it easier to open up and discuss feelings or challenges. This way of building a relationship makes it easier to relate recovery to everyday experiences. This way, when the hard times come, it's easier to pick up that 1000 pound phone to call and reach out.
Regular coffee appointments provide ongoing accountability. We are, no offense, undisciplined people. Planning to meet weekly, or more often, if necessary, helps to solidify and strengthen the sponsor-sponsee relationship, which is crucial for building the trust that fosters the honesty required to recover and stay that way.
Having Recovery Meetings at Memphis Alano Club with your sponsor is part of a recovery tradition that's been around since Bill first met Bob!
So, call your sponsor... or someone who calls you sponsor... and ask them to #meetmeattheMAC
We're open 8am to 2pm Sunday through Thursday and 8am to 10pm on Fridays & Saturdays.
Don't like coffee? No problem! We also serve tea (hot or iced), lemonade, soda, and delicious pastries 7 days a week.
